DLC: Opening Session

Intro from Bob Tapella, new Public Printer.

He sees GPO as an aggregator and facilitator. Wants to provide flexibility to library partners.

Specific issues:
- health of gpo: celebrating 4 straight years in the black
- gpo express: 800+ publications have been added to the program from the gpo express program
- sales program: important – need to try & make it successful. currently reviewing options to try & make money
- digitization: see report on fdlp desktop
- fdsys: new name to be announced later (note: new name is federal digital system)

next sudocs will not be ric davis. however, ric will be helping mr. tapella find a new superintendent of documents. what qualities should the next sudocs possess? Email ric (rdavis@gpo.gov) – no names, just qualities & characteristics.

distribution backlog

  • fdlp desktop will have a new depository distribution web page
  • info on box numbers, shipping lists, timelines, responses to claims, additional contact info
  • 7 new staff members have been added to distribution area

Also: Ric is in charge of customer relationship management system. This should lead to better, more timely responses.

biennial survey
- focus on info re: public access assessments [gathering info in biennial survey]

fdlp express
- can tailor fdlp-l so that you receive announcements on info you’re interested in
- can customize via fdlp.gov

digitization
proposed path forward:
- establish partnerships with other agencies (nara, loc)
- establish standards for digitization
- check the summary report

fdlp handbook
- still draft – going under another review

shared regionals
- received over 300 comments
- guidelines are now final & available on the gpo web site

ILS
- check gpo update
- currently migrating to v. 18 of aleph
- close to release of z39.50 gateway
- library directory is complete & should soon replace the existing directory

metadata extraction
- dtic, odu working on a contract to automate extraction of metadata
- see announcement from a couple of weeks ago
- looking to evaluate alternatives to creating metadata, look at staffing, develop requirements for use with fdsys

homeland security digital library soon to be partner with gpo
new templates/info for partnerships on fdlp.gov (see partnership FAQs)

GPO wants to continue online training sessions with OPAL. There will be upcoming sessions on the new directory, e-government, etc.
