Last week the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) submitted an application to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to operate a new nuclear power facility in North Alabama. From the press release:
“If approved by the NRC, the license to build and operate a two-unit plant at the Bellefonte site in Hollywood, Ala., would be issued to TVA. The TVA Board would decide whether to build a new nuclear plant at the site.”
The TVA press release is available from their web site. For more information on how the NRC will determine whether or not to grant the TVA an operating license, check out the NRC web site. The AP’s take on it is available here.

The Birmingham News is reporting that the Unit 1 reactor at Browns Ferry has begun pumping electricity into TVA transmission lines. The reactor was at 45% power this weekend, and the TVA is estimating that it should be at 100% by the end of the week.
Update: Unit 1 was ‘idled’ on Saturday due to another leak. Still no updates on the TVA site…

Apparently the reactor at Brown’s Ferry Unit 1 was shut down early yesterday morning, after workers discovered a hydraulic leak. More info is available from the Birmingham News. So far there’s no updated information on the TVA or NRC web sites.

A couple of weeks ago I posted about the possibility of Unit 1 being restarted at the Brown’s Ferry Nuclear Power Plant. Yesterday, the NRC issued a release indicating that they authorized that restart. This means that Alabama now has 5 operating nuclear power reactors.

As you may know, Alabama has two nuclear reactor sites (Brown’s Ferry and Farley). Brown’s Ferry has come under scrutiny from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission - all three units were shut down in 1985 - and while the NRC has already restarted units 2, and 3, unit 1 is still operating under a recovery plan. You can find out a lot more at the NRC web site - specifically on the Brown’s Ferry Unit 1 Recovery page.
There is also a public meeting scheduled for today at 5:00 pm regarding the Oversight Process Annual Assessment for Farley. Location is County Commissioners Chambers, Houston County Administration Building, 3rd Floor, 462 North Oats Street, Dothan, AL 3630.
